Wow, what an incredible and unique experience! Chichilo offers a tasting menu of seven of the moles you can find in Oaxaca and greater Mexico along with mezcal pairings for each. It’s perfect if you want to try a lot of different moles without sacrificing precious tummy space on just one dish. While here, I also tried the tostado de insecto, which was almost too beautiful to eat! I didn’t know what to expect but it was a solid introduction to the food on offer here. Everything is prepared to perfection, vibes are exceptional, and the service is impeccable. I was taken care of by Angel who was a great guide through all the moles and mezcals I tried and also had great recommendations for other menu items. It was pricy, but worth the splurge. 10/10
Chichilo is an ABSOLUTE MUST when visiting Oaxaca. I cannot recommend enough. This was our most memorable meal and experience while visiting. My husband and I were lucky that we scored a table on a Monday night. Once we sat, the restaurant filled up quickly. We both opted for the tasting of the 7 moles. It was such an immersive experience for the senses and we had such a wonderful guide, Angel, who walked us through each mole on the plate as soon as they were placed in front of us. My husband and I tried each mole in tandem, which added a layer of fun and discussion to our dinner. We finished the night with two local mezcals recommended by Angel and the homemade passion fruit ice cream. The ice cream was a delight for the senses; it was tarte, milky, and included texture from the passion fruit seeds. I could write a dissertation on this meal, it exceeded any expectations I had. Mole is a must try when in Oaxaca, don’t let anyone steer you otherwise. There is a mole for you! Additionally, while dining, we had the lovely opportunity to meet and chat with Ana and Paco, the owners of Chichilo. It is clear that there is love and care in every dish that comes out of the kitchen and they care to curate an experience for every single guest that walks through their doors. I wish them all of the success. Please pay them a visit.
Firsr of all, Oaxaca is magical. So many places to eat and explore. This was our 4th night here and we were looking for a place near our hotel to eat. We stopped to look at the menu and decided to give it a try. The service was excellent. We were assisted by several servers and all had pleasant personalities and good recommendations. Although enchiladas verdes wasn’t an option on the menu, they prepared my enchiladas pollo with their green mole which had a pleasant flavor. My wife had a cauliflower dish with a tangy and sweet light mole with a flavor unlike any mole O have had. Overall we enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere was very pleasant. Will definitely come back on our next visit to Oaxaca.
The 7 moles sampler is a definite must try. Walking around Oaxaca, I was not able to find all 7 and if I did, it would be hard eating 7 main dishes This place allows you to have all 7 in a nice sample size as an entree and my waitress Dulce Maria was extremely friendly and informative and guided me through the tasting with its ingredients, history and how to eat them and pair them with. Cocktails are great too, but that’s not why we are here. Overall I recommend the restaurant. Great way to introduce yourself to authentic Oaxacan cuisine
A husband and wife chef led restaurant that we popped into on our last night. The staff was so kind and helpful. We spoke with both the husband and wife separately about the dishes we tried. The torta with grasshoppers, ants and worms was visually pretty and delicious. The corn soup was tasty and the seven mole entree was a palette pleaser. I fight realize there were so many different moles. For dessert the passionfruit ice cream was delicious and the meringue cake with nuts was phenomenal.
My last Oaxaca dinner before flying home. As a send off to myself, I came here for mole and I was not disappointed at all. Angel, my server was so professional and kind. He suggested that I try their 7 mole sampler (which was my intention). The green mole was my least favorite not because it wasn’t good, it was just too mild for me. All 7 moles were absolutely delicious, I loved them all. They each had their own unique flavor profiles and spices.
Words cannot describe what an incredible night my partner and I had at Chichilo. It could not have been more perfect. We were recommended to go from an acquaintance and how grateful we are to them now. We went on a whim and it was the best hospitality we have ever received. The food was so flavourful, the salsas to start perfectly whet my palette, and I cannot recommend the escamoles and tostada enough - it was truly an authentic Oaxacan experience - like Pujol but half the price! The corn soup was the star of the show though My partner and I aren’t even vegetarian and we had the best vegetarian meal of our lives (if you consider insects vegetarian). Thank you to Paco and Anna for one of the best meals of our lives - we are forever grateful
This is more than a restaurant, it’s an experience. The ambience, the drinks, the food, and the staff all come together in incredible harmony to create a truly memorable dining experience. Angel, our waiter, was extremely friendly and deeply knowledgeable about the cocktails, mezcals, and each of the dishes on the menu. My wife and I both ordered the seven mole tasting, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Whether you’ve had mole before or not, this is a must try. I was genuinely surprised by the range and complexity of flavors, each mole was distinct and delicious. We finished dinner with local mezcal and a delightful homemade passion fruit ice cream We also had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Anna and Paco, who are amazing hosts and clearly passionate about sharing the depth and beauty of Oaxacan cuisine. I highly recommend Chichilo to anyone looking for a warm, authentic introduction to Oaxacan food and drink.
